Seo Hye Lee "Ohrenbetäubende Stille"

Deafening Silence is a collaborative video work by artist Seo Hye Lee, which was created in exchange with t/deaf communities in Düsseldorf and other cities. The work explores how sound in urban space can be interpreted, imagined and explored through visual cues.

The starting point is the phrase "deafening silence", which is taken up and reinterpreted here from t/Deaf perspectives. Through the poetic, humorous and sometimes irritating subtitles of short video sequences without sound, the work questions the meanings we ascribe to sounds in the cityscape and how these meanings arise in the interaction between perception, context and expectations.

From Monday, April 20, 2026, artistically subtitled videos will appear on various screens in public spaces(list of all addresses). In this way, the urban space itself becomes a place for reflection on how sound is experienced, described and interpreted, and whose perspectives are brought to bear.
