With a voice that has been described as "smoke and velvet", British singer-songwriter Kirsty McGee has developed a distinctive musical identity that defies conventional categorization. Inspired by folk, jazz, blues and Americana, McGee coined the term hobopop to describe her fluid, genre-resistant style - music characterized more by intuition and curiosity than convention.
A multi-instrumentalist and instrument builder, McGee is known for her use of unusual instruments such as the singing saw, bass flute, dulcitone, straw violin and Marxophone. Her DIY ethic and lyrical depth have earned her BBC Folk Awards nominations, Arts Council England funding and continued critical acclaim.
Kirsty McGee refuses to be pinned down - she continues to push creative boundaries, creating music that is intimate, cinematic and emotionally raw - a true outsider voice with cult status.
