When we think of the United States, we think of Hollywood, Silicon Valley and country music, but also of independence and boundless freedom. The USA is a place of longing - or at least it was for a long time.

On the nation's 250th birthday, US expert Johanna Roth asks: What has remained of the American promise since its founding in 1776, and why was it problematic from the outset? She looks at the country both critically and empathetically, not only in the present, but also in the mirror of its past. A multi-layered portrait of a nation torn apart.
