The exhibition Controversy & Paradoxes2 brings together photographers who question the contradictions of our time, characterized by manifold crises, and at the same time make rays of hope visible through contemporary figures of resistance: modern witches, healers, researchers, committed diasporas. In the face of the dead ends of progress, photography opens up paths of repair and inclusion to enable a re-enchantment of the world.
In a world where political crises are mounting, the climate emergency is increasing and social inequality and the suffering of minorities are becoming an everyday reality, the prospect of a better life is coming up against limits and contradictions that have always been anchored in human history. Through modernization, man destroys many things and through innovation, he strives to repair this damage. This is the paradox that the artists invited to the Arles 2025 Photo House as part of the MRO Foundation's Sortilèges program have explored. The various photographic narratives show the concrete actions of people who are committed and dedicated to confronting the gloom and horror with which our lives are flooded. Through these stories, the aim is to show the different forms of resistance and resilience that make it possible to overcome apocalyptic conditions and re-enchant the world. Just as new green grows on scorched earth, may we seize our chance to realize our vision of tolerance, inclusion, nature conservation and reconstruction - for a livable and vibrant world. - Pascale Giffard
