In this guided tour, Hendrik Folkerts, curator of the exhibition Vaginal Davis: Fabulous Product, gives an insight into Vaginal Davis' artistic practice.

20 years after the artist, author and performer Vaginal Davis moved from Los Angeles to Berlin, the Gropius Bau is presenting the first comprehensive solo exhibition of her work in Germany.

Vaginal Davis: Fabulous Product offers an overview of the entire spectrum of Ms. Davis' work, which combines punk and glamor, queer activism and black counterculture as well as resistance and desire. Seven large-scale installations on the first floor of the Gropius Bau show works created between 1985 and 2025, including paintings, video and film works, zines, texts, music and performances. At the same time, the exhibition focuses on Ms. Davis' numerous artistic collaborations - including with the Berlin art collective CHEAP, which is showing the installation Choose Mutation, with photographs by Annette Frick, and the New York artist Jonathan Berger.

Hendrik Folkerts is curator of international contemporary art and head of exhibitions at Moderna Museet, Stockholm. Previously, he was Dittmer Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Art Institute of Chicago from 2017 to 2022, curator of documenta 14, Kassel/Athens, from 2014 to 2017, and curator of performance, film and discursive programs at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, from 2010 to 2015. He has curated numerous solo and international group exhibitions as well as collection presentations, new commissions and program series that are anchored in the broader field of performance and build on feminist, queer and anti-colonial references from art history.
