What is ME/CFS?

- ME/CFS is a severe neuroimmunological multisystem disease, usually triggered by a viral infection (e.g. COVID-19, influenza, Epstein Barr)

- around 650,000 people in Germany have ME/CFS, around 40 million worldwide, 75% of whom are women. Many children & adolescents are also affected

- although ME/CFS was described as a neurological disease by the WHO as early as 1969, there are still no curative drugs/therapies available today

- the main symptom is post-exertional malaise (PEM), a delayed deterioration of the condition that lasts for a long time or even permanently. This is triggered, for example, by the smallest muscular, cognitive, sensory or even emotional activities. Even everyday things, such as showering, can trigger PEM

- Those affected suffer from leaden exhaustion, brain fog, pain, orthostatic intolerance, dizziness, sleep disorders and a strong sensitivity to stimuli such as light, touch, noise and much more.

- Due to the pronounced symptoms, a normal life is often not possible. Those severely affected can only lie down and do nothing else!
