Mastering Type: Type Talks und Pop-Up-Ausstellung

A weekend dedicated to type design: What is the latest in type design? What type design approaches are emerging in international master's degree programs? As part of "Mastering Type", designers will provide insights into current developments and present their work at the Type Talks on April 25, 2026. The accompanying pop-up exhibition can be visited until April 26, 2026.

"Mastering Type" is an exhibition and event series that presents new type designs from international master's degree courses, organized by Lucas de Groot (graphic designer and lecturer at the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences) in collaboration with the Typostammtisch Berlin. In 2026, the series will celebrate its tenth anniversary with the anniversary edition at the Kulturforum.

Type Talks on April 25, 2026

On Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., designers will present selected type designs in a series of talks and workshops and discuss them with the audience. The event will take place in the anniversary exhibition "Mastering Type". It is open to the public and free of charge.

In addition, historical type objects from the collections of the Art Library will be presented as a "Collection Break".

Pop-up exhibition until April 26, 2026

The "Mastering Type" anniversary show at the Kulturforum will provide an overview of the last decade in large-format typography posters on April 25 and 26, 2026. Free admission.

Type design today

Type design, i.e. the design of a typeface, is a special course of study. Among the renowned locations for this course are TypeMedia Den Haag (NL), Écal Lausanne (CH), Nancy (FR), Amiens (FR), Buenos Aires (AR), Reading (UK) and TypeParis (FR). For final projects, the designed typefaces are presented in the format of a 60 x 124 cm poster, together with a process book documenting the concept, ideas and work steps. The title "Mastering Type" alludes to the status of the degree, a specialized master's degree in graphic design, and at the same time means mastering the design of a typeface.
