The Meisterwerke concert series in Berlin Cathedral presents cultural life in all its diversity - from great classical music to literary-musical evenings and club culture. In the midst of sacred architecture and unique acoustics, unforgettable evenings are created - impressive, moving, inspiring.
An evening between literature and music - poetic, multi-layered, inspiring.
Ulrich Matthes, one of the most important actors of our time, reads from the autobiographical stories "Der Keller" and "Der Atem" by Thomas Bernhard.
At his side: the multi-award-winning Merlin Ensemble Vienna, which opens up a musical resonance chamber with music by Mozart, Beethoven, Louis Spohr and Till A. Körber - entirely in the spirit of Bernhard, for whom music was always his "first and foremost specialty".
The texts tell of survival, of resistance - and of the saving power of art.
A sensitive portrait - musically framed by compositions that reflect, mirror and comment on Bernhard's world.
Mozart's Magic Flute is one of those works whose incredible magic has inspired generations of composers, poets and listeners. This opera, whose levels appeal to both the mind and the heart, is unique in the history of music.
Thomas Bernhard was also fascinated by Mozart's music. "One day I went in the opposite direction," he writes in "Der Keller". He approached people - it was his salvation. Like Tamino and Pamina in The Magic Flute, he also had to pass tests, almost search for them, in order to be able to go his own way independently and with his own will. His teenage years were marked by illness and isolation - but he kept going. Music was his protection. Mozart and the Magic Flute remained his favorite things.
