Ming(R)a Kino - Blum: Masters of Their Own Destiny

Documentary film: "Blum: Masters of Their Own Destiny"

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5BBJDB-JDI

2024, Bosnia-Herzegovina, 76min

Director: Jasmila Žbanić

The film tells the story of Emerik Blum, the founder of the Energoinvest company in Sarajevo. During the period of Yugoslav socialism, Blum developed a globally successful company based on a model of workers' self-management in which employees had a say in management and profit distribution.

Today, in a time of growing social inequality and capitalist market logic, this model seems almost like a forgotten utopia. Using archive footage and interviews with contemporary witnesses, the film paints a picture of an era in which many people believed they could shape a fairer future together.

Afterwards, we would like to reflect on the film together in our Ming(R)a Talk and get into conversation.

Ming(R)a Talk - Utopia or reality? Solidarity-based economy then and now

Following the film, we invite you to a moderated discussion. Based on the historical example of the Energoinvest company, we will build a bridge to the present and ask how collective forms of economic activity and coexistence feel in concrete terms today and how they can be shaped in everyday life.

We welcome Ulrike Bez, filmmaker and resident of the self-managed cooperative "Wagnis4" in Munich, as an invited discussion partner. From her perspective, we will talk about everyday experiences of cooperative living, joint decision-making processes and neighborhood solidarity. Ulrike Bez made a documentary film(Wer wagt, beginnt) about a self-managed cooperative project. She is also known for Töchter des Aufbruchs or Es geht durch die Welt ein Geflüster.

The discussion is designed as an open format and will be supplemented by contributions from the audience. The aim is to bring together experiences, discuss perspectives and reflect together on how communal and common good-oriented practice can be lived in the here and now.

Ming(R)a Music

YU+ Listening Lounge: balkaNet DJs + friends

It's getting cozy in the concert hall: instead of a party, it's time to relax on the couch (for now)! We'll roll out the carpets, decorate the hall and play some cozy tunes! Let's see what the evening brings, but for now we'll take it easy. :-)
