Sunken Scores Tour 2026
Jazz trio from Japan

Nautilus is a Japanese jazz trio led by drummer Toshiyuki Sasaki. Together with bassist Shigeki Umezawa and Mariko Nakabayashi on keyboards, they are known for their unmistakable style, which can be described as a modern rare groove and embodies a mixture of jazz, funk, disco, soul and even hip-hop.

In the beginning there was a song - and the song was called "Nautilus". Tokyo drummer Toshiyuki Sasaki heard it at some point and then named his newly formed band after this obscure Bob James groove track from 1974. Nautilus began to play their sound mix based on earlier music in this mixture of digging, rare and organic grooves. Except that it was new and came from Japan.

German DJ and digger Oonops aka Patrick Decker soon stumbled across the Nautilus version of Roy Ayer's "We Live In Brooklyn Baby" and was immediately hooked. So he got in touch with the band and has been releasing their productions outside Japan for several years now. The Tokyo trio Nautilus is certainly one of the best rare groove bands of the new generation in Japan and is now also highly praised outside of Japan.

In May of this year, their new album "Sunken Scores" will be released on the German label Oonops Drops, which focuses on movie soundtracks and TV scores. With 12 strong cover versions from the movie landscape and one original composition, which bears the unmistakable signature of Nautilus, they will once again get the audience grooving.
