Nils Petter Molvær: The Norwegian trumpeter, composer and producer combines jazz, ambient, house, electronics and breakbeats as well as elements from hip-hop, rock and pop - and creates unique and dramatic soundscapes of profound intensity. He was one of the first to combine modern jazz improvisation with dancefloor and electronic elements, transporting Asian vibrations into a dense network of polyrhythms and meditative soundscapes. This resulted in beguiling, cross-genre sounds that had never been heard before in this form and intensity and which still have an addictive effect today and are best experienced live as soon as the opportunity arises.
Born on the Norwegian island of Sula in 1960, Nils Petter Molvær came into contact with music at an early age through his father and gained experience as a bassist, drummer and keyboardist during his school years. He began to study the trumpet in Trondheim, but soon abandoned this in order to concentrate fully on the unacademic playing of his instrument. He moved to Oslo and worked with key figures in the Scandinavian scene such as Arild Andersen and his band Masqualero, Sidsel Endresen, Marilyn Mazur and Jon Balke. A milestone in his career was his 1997 solo debut "Khmer", a unique fusion of dark soundscapes, trancey electro beats and enraptured trumpet melodies. He influenced a whole generation of younger colleagues from the jazz and electro scenes in equal measure and can rightly be described as the founder of electro-acoustic jazz.
