In the middle of the Thirty Years' War, Oberammergau is ravaged by the plague - until the village vows to perform the Passion of Christ from now until eternity, if God spares them. It falls to the inexperienced pastor Johannes to get the play off the ground. In a very short time, he has to transform peasants and shepherds into apostles and Romans - without costumes, without a stage, without a text. And he also has a powerful opponent: the head of the village, Agnes, has lost both her children to the plague, hates God and will do anything to thwart the project. The village soon splits into friends and foes of the Passion. And John has to move heaven and hell to defeat Agnes, the plague and his own doubts...
