You shouldn't say bad things about the dead - in ON BECOMING A GUINEA FOWL, this unwritten law is put to the test by Zambian-Welsh filmmaker Rungano Nyoni.

Shula has only recently returned to her Zambian homeland after a long absence. As she drives home late at night in her car from a masquerade costume party, a dead body is suddenly found on the road - it is her 50-year-old uncle Fred.

As the preparations for the multi-day funeral ceremony get underway, she and her cousins gradually uncover the family secrets that their aunts would have preferred to bury with Uncle Fred - Fred was a serial sex offender.

ON BECOMING A GUINEA FOWL is a portrait of Zambia's matriarchal society and impressively tells of the lasting traumas of sexual abuse and intergenerational alienation. Shifting between pitch-black comedy and haunting drama, the film was awarded the prize for best director in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes and won the Golden Eye for best feature film at the Zurich Film Festival. Director Rungano Nyoni was a guest at AFRIKAMERA in 2017 with her multi-award-winning feature film I AM NOT A WITCH.

RUNGANO NYONI was born in Lusaka (Zambia) in 1982 and emigrated to Wales with her parents as a child. She studied at the University of the Arts in London and now lives in Lisbon. Her short films THE LIST and MWANSA THE GREAT have already enjoyed considerable success at international film festivals and received BAFTA nominations. Her short film LISTEN was nominated for the 2015 European Film Awards and won the prize for best narrative short film at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Rungano's feature film debut I AM NOT A WITCH tells the story of an 8-year-old girl who is banished to a witch camp. The film premiered in Cannes and was nominated for numerous international awards. In 2018, Rungano won the BAFTA for this outstanding debut.
