In the organizer's words:
Global nutrition is under pressure: by 2050, around 10 billion people are expected to be living on the planet. At the same time, urbanization is progressing, arable land is becoming scarcer, freshwater resources are dwindling and supply chains are becoming increasingly unreliable. The question is no longer whether, but how we need to rethink food.
The food4future Open Lab evening will take you into conceivable food worlds. Immersive technologies will allow you to take a look into this future together. You will experience and design new spaces with all your senses - including taste. All future designers are welcome!
Impulse: Food transformation - what could it look like?
Nutrition affects us all - and has far-reaching consequences for our health and that of our planet. But the interrelationships are complex: how does our eating behavior influence global agricultural and food systems? Will we have to say goodbye to what we are used to? And should Europe be better able to feed and supply itself instead of importing food?
Dr. Ferike Thom (Thünen Institute of Farm Economics, Braunschweig) will provide a well-founded impulse.
Digital tasting station & mixed reality
Our algae reactor is enhanced by mixed reality: additional levels of information make visible how innovative cultivation systems work and what role technology and design will play in the food of the future. With a simple movement, you can immerse yourself in this virtual level and experience how food production can be rethought. The digital extension is designed and accompanied by Marino Gabel (HTW Berlin).
But it's not just about what we produce - it's also about how we eat. Edgar Weiss and Emma Schlegel (HTW Berlin) will show you what role communal cooking and eating formats such as community kitchens could play in the future and how new foods - such as insects - are becoming part of our diet in surprising and everyday ways.
Moderation & introduction
- Prof. Dr. Monika Schreiner, Jette Berend and Leonhard Meitner from the Leibniz Institute of Horticultural Sciences (IGZ) will jointly introduce the central questions and accompany the dialog between today's production and consumption decisions and the food worlds of tomorrow.
Workshop leader:
- Dr. Ferike Thom from the Thünen Institute of Farm Economics in Braunschweig studied economics and agricultural economics in Berlin and completed her doctorate in Göttingen. In her research, she investigates how nutritional behavior is linked to the ecological and economic impact of agriculture.
- Marino Gabel, research assistant at HTW Berlin, is part of the Creative Media research group at the Research and Training Center for Culture and Informatics. He specializes in the areas of mixed reality, virtual and augmented reality, gamification, interactive systems and multi-user virtual environments.
- Prof. Dr. Monika Schreiner heads the Plant Quality & Food Security program area at the Leibniz Institute of Horticultural Sciences (IGZ), is an honorary professor at the University of Hanover and coordinator of the food4future consortium.
- Jette Berend is a project manager at food4future with a focus on science communication and new communication formats.
- Leonhard Meitner is a project team member at food4future with a focus on science communication, particularly in the context of economic, environmental and climate policy.
