Joy Alpuerto Ritter's choreographic work is characterized by a fusion of different movement vocabularies: Her classical training in ballet and contemporary dance is combined with early studies of Filipino and Polynesian traditional dances, as well as her involvement in the Berlin hip-hop and voguing scene. Rooted in a deep connection to the communal aspects of dance, Alpuerto Ritter moves between large-scale stage productions and urban battle formats, bridging different cultural aesthetics and choreographic traditions.
In her performance at KW, which unfolds over the course of three hours in three 20-minute sequences, Alpuerto Ritter enters into a dialog with Trail Dinosaur, one of the largest works from Kazuko Miyamoto's String Construction series, which is installed on the third floor. This encounter ties in with Miyamoto's own practice: In 1979, the artist invited dancer Yoshiko Chuma to perform with cotton threads in reference to one of her large-scale sculptures, which later became known as A Girl on Trail Dinosaur . The performance refers to the role of the body in the creation of String Constructions, as well as to Miyamoto's growing interest in the body, the performativity of space and form, and the political dimensions of work and exhibition.
Joy Alpuerto Ritter (born 1982, USA) grew up in Freiburg im Breisgau and received ballet lessons from an early age. After graduating from the Palucca Dance School in Dresden in 2004, she established herself as a versatile dancer and choreographer in Berlin in the fields of classical ballet, contemporary dance, Filipino folk dance, urban dance and street dance. Ritter tours internationally with renowned companies such as the Akram Khan Company, Wang Ramirez, Christoph Winkler, Heike Hennig and Cirque du Soleil.
