Putin's Russia has been waging war against Ukraine for over three years. What Putin is aiming to achieve with this is still controversial: Does he merely want to keep NATO at bay so that he can then rest easy? Or is the war in Ukraine just the prelude to a restoration of the Russian empire - perhaps even its expansion? Should we expect attacks on Europe? On liberal democracy worldwide? And how can we imagine a Russia after Putin - will it be more peaceful and liberal or more aggressive and authoritarian?
We want to discuss this with political scientist and Eastern Europe expert Gwendolyn Sassed, who sees the war in Ukraine as a conflict between authoritarianism and democracy. Her discussion partner Jörg Baberowski, historian and expert on Russia, on the other hand, interprets the war as a conflict between empire and nation state. Moderator: Moritz Rudolph
