Is a new fascism looming?

In view of the rise of the AfD and other radical right-wing populist parties in Europe and the erosion of democracy in countries such as the USA, Turkey and Argentina, it is sometimes claimed that fascism is on the verge of a comeback. Is it?

On seven Wednesday evenings, we will try to get to the bottom of this question by discussing texts we have read together. We will look at the potential of right-wing extremist parties and political movements, but also at the social phenomenon that is often described in Germany as a "shift to the right". And we will ask ourselves whether historical predecessors - National Socialism in Germany, but also fascism in Italy - have anything to do with what seems to be emerging today. In doing so, we not only want to develop a well-founded approach to a pressing social problem, but also discuss possible perspectives for action.

We will read the following texts:

• Umberto Eco, The Eternal Fascism
• Victor Klemperer, The Language of the Third Reich
• Judith Kohlenberger, Against the new harshness
• Doron Rabinovici, The Attitude
• Eva von Redecker, This urge for harshness
• Lukas Rietzschel, Punching the world with your fist

The titles by Adorno, Rabinovici and Rietzschel are available as e-books from the Hamburger Bücherhallen; the Bücherhallen have more than ten copies each of the books by Eco and Redecker.

Politisch Lesen is a joint project of HausDrei and the Altona bookshop ZweiEinsDrei. The evenings are prepared and moderated by Klaus Neumann. Klaus was a professor of history at an Australian university until a few years ago. He is the author of the book Blumen und Brandsätze. A German History 1989-2023 about the treatment of refugees in Hamburg and Saxon Switzerland.
