Portals such as those found on Museum Island and around the Lustgarten are more than just representative, symbolic passages through important historical buildings: they mark transitions to other times, connect cultural heritage with contemporary urban society, bear witness to Berlin's eventful architectural and collection history and the changing political balance of power.
In a panel discussion, Martin Maischberger (Antikensammlung, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin), Michael Falser (Universität Heidelberg) and Hanno Hochmuth (Leibniz-Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung Potsdam) will provide insights into the context in which three portal buildings were created and their historical and political significance: the propylon to the Athenian sanctuary of Pergamon in the Pergamon Museum, the Indian Sanchi Gate, which has been reproduced several times, the latest replica of which is located opposite the Museum Island on the other side of the Lustgarten, and Portal IV of the reconstructed palace (and today a north-west entrance to the Humboldt Forum), the original of which can be found in the neighboring State Council building.
The event is being held to mark the bicentenary of the laying of the foundation stone of the Altes Museum (1825).
