15 years of Eatbrain: dark, deep, unfiltered, unrestrained

On May 30, one of the most influential labels in the neurofunk scene is coming to Berlin to celebrate its 15th anniversary with all of us. However, Eatbrain is not just a label, but rather a platform and hub for the scene. The label stands for dark, precise sound design, complex basslines and high production quality with just the right mix of raw energy and immediacy that make up the core of drum'n'bass. The progressive direction is reflected in the balanced mix of new talent and established acts. Club nights such as the Eatbrain Night or the Eatbrain League bring the releases directly into the scene and thus make the cultural core of the label tangible: a triad of artistic promotion, community building and aesthetic stringency.

Inseparably linked to neurofunk is Jade Venom, whose early releases on labels such as Moving Shadow and Black Sun Empire played a key role in defining the genre. In 2009, he created Eatbrain, a platform initially for his own productions, before opening it up to other artists in 2011. Tracks like "Got Lost" with his longtime collaborator Matt-U or "Unexist" are prime examples of Jade's early sound: the menacing, abrasive atmosphere is unmistakable. From there to his Eatbrain-era releases, there is a clear line: an uncompromising, dark sound that has evolved from raw aggression to highly precise, detailed neurofunk.

His lyrics come straight from life into the music: Coppa, MC, vocalist and songwriter from Leeds, moves between hip-hop, grime and drum'n'bass. Personal, political and precise, his lines get to the heart of everyday life and social issues and draw their poetic power from his no-frills directness. His presence is enormous, whether live or in the studio.

The German-Australian duo Zombie Cats will also be performing. Their debut EP "Must Eat" (2015), which marked their breakthrough, was of course released on Eatbrain. With a flair for the best vibes, their stylistic spectrum ranges from neurofunk, techstep, liquid funk to jungle and beyond. Their distinctive, spooky masks and numerous outstanding productions have earned them a status that many producers can only dream of.

Berlin-based producer Current Value is a master at combining melodic, untamed, almost brutal and disturbing elements. His intense tracks bring together complex structures and driving basslines and create a fascinatingly oppressive atmosphere in which you can - no, must - lose yourself. His music always shows an unmistakable feel for the right balance of hardness and groove.

With driving basslines, clearly structured tracks and controlled use of timbres,Prolix creates a pressure that makes club floors vibrate. In addition to releases on RAM, Metalheadz, Blackout and Virus, he also runs his own label Trendkill. A milestone was his crowdfunded album "Project Trendkill" together with Gridlok, which not only topped the download charts, but also landed in the record bags of all self-respecting DJs.
