On Saturday, May 16, Düsseldorf musician Stefan Schwander, alias Harmonious Thelonious, returns to Schleuse Zwei with his new album "Grumpy Pieces".

The record feels like a condensation of earlier ideas: interlocking melodies, hypnotic patterns, a persistent focus on rhythm and texture, coupled with a sound that is rougher, drier and more immediate than before. Musically, "Grumpy Pieces" draws from familiar territory within the Harmonious Thelonious universe:
Pan-African and Middle Eastern rhythmic concepts, repetitive minimal structures, stripped-down electronics and noise used as a structural force. But everything here seems less firmly established, more unstable, sometimes on the verge of falling apart.
Melodies rub against rough bass foundations; dry snare beats cut sharply through the mix. The groove remains central, but now carries a nervous, fractured quality - noticeably more restless than one would expect from a project that has been active for almost eighteen years.
The title "Grumpy Pieces" is more than just an ironic aside. The album reflects a present that is characterized by political and social tensions. Anger, uncertainty and a subdued sense of despair run through the tracks without the music ever becoming literal or slipping into overt commentary. Instead, it works through friction: between dancefloor dynamics and disruption, immediacy and resistance.

The album was once again created in Schwander's hometown of Düsseldorf, using a working method
was used that is firmly rooted in the moment. The tracks were not arranged on screen, but intuitively developed, recorded, discarded and redesigned.

This approach also ties in directly with Harmonious Thelonious' live practice: Music understood as a repetitive state, a trance-like space that persists rather than narrates. Limitation, intuition and spontaneity are not stylistic gestures here, but essential conditions of the music itself. Influences from everyday listening experiences - from Brazilian music and electronic records to film soundtracks - deliberately remain in the background, completely absorbed in a self-contained world of sound.
Grumpy Pieces is not a break, but a sharpening. An album that further condenses and roughens Harmonious Thelonious' unmistakable sound, offering an uneasy yet physical soundtrack to the current social climate. Dance music with a bite.
