Drummer Richard Spaven is forging his own path into the future. Rooted in the British club and hip-hop scene, he brings a fresh, modern and at the same time traditional approach to his instrument. His drumming combines machine-like precision with jazz-influenced improvisational skills and has earned him gigs with the likes of British rapper Loyle Carner, Guru from hip-hop duo Gang Starr, producer Flying Lotus, singer José James and Brainfeeder artist Jameszoo. His album "Sole Subject" (2024) is a captivating crossover of electronica, hip-hop and jazz, exploring the nuanced relationship between live drumming and electronic elements.

Spaven's sound is best described as a nod to the past with an open ear to the future. Like his compositions, Spaven's drumming is elusive and defies genre. He often eschews conventional downbeats and cadences in favor of insidious syncopations and sonic disruptions reminiscent of a DJ set. In some of his drum'n'bass and dubstep-influenced explorations, he never misses a sixteenth note.

Not only is Spaven a world-class performer, his work as a producer and composer is exceptional. Together with Alfa Mist, Spaven writes and releases as 44th Move, his distinctive sound can be found on Loyle Carner's albums "Hugo" and "Live At Royal Albert Hall", on electronica heavyweight Chris Clark's LP "Sus Dog" Spaven's complex drums support Thom Yorke's vocals.
