At night, a hundred years ago, when the borders were edging closer to the small tables, when the armchairs trembled on the brink of the abyss, when the curtains were drawn even tighter to protect against the tilting world outside, the most beautiful utopias blossomed on the edge of freedom in the coffee houses of Europe. Friends were made and enemies were made, cooperatives and alliances were founded, watered and destroyed again. Loves were kindled and torn apart. Great novels and short stories were acclaimed and torn to shreds. Political ideas were conceived, manifested and discarded. The planet was out of joint, so why not unhinge it completely and put it back together again at the tables of the cafés, that was the idea. We all know: it turned out differently.

Robert Stadlober takes us into a world that could have made ours a better one, if only we had let it. With stories, literary vignettes and poems set to new music by such diverse spirits as: Masha Kaleko, Erich Mühsam, Irmgard Keun, Joseph Roth, Peter Weiss, Else Lasker-Schüler, Stefan Zweig, Rose Ausländer, Karl Kraus and all the rest, he creates a panorama of a desperate hope, a dream of another world and a future that never was because it was chased away, destroyed, killed.
