"GET LOUD!", "EXPAND THE RANGE!", "BE PRESENT!" seem to be basic rules in the manual for political action in times of upheaval. But it is not only verbal volume, real-time postings and smart argumentation that are powerful and empowering. Silence can also be powerful and exercise power as a deliberate communicative act.
The Münster-based artists' collective RUE OBSCURE is exploring this double meaning of the English term "power" of silence as part of a multi-part discourse series at various locations, focusing on a different aspect of silence at each event.
In the first salon, together with communication scientist Prof. Dr. Sabine Kirchhoff (Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences), questions relating to silence as a communicative practice will be examined: What role does silence play in communication? When do we attribute a positive power to it, when do we fear the power of silence? Is silence now an endangered resource?
The evening's input will be followed by a collective ritual of silence before the salon ends with an open get-together over drinks and snacks.
