In March 1996, Schnaftl Ufftschik took to the stage for the first time at the legendary Cafe Saba in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg district. Handmade posters and flyers advertised four Saturdays of concerts under the title "Classical vulgar folklore and obsessive ethnomysticism".
The audience had absolutely no idea what to expect from this band, just as the 2 female and 5 male musicians had absolutely no idea what to expect from the audience. The first song: Schnaftl Ufftschik - an original composition by accordionist Rolf "Cello" Fischer - was celebrated just as much as Fischer's explanation of the piece about the good-natured West Siberian forest goblin who protects blond-haired girls fetching water and who is still Schnaftl's inspiration and motivation today. He continues to collect music wherever he goes on the Trans-Siberian Railway, from Vladivostok to Buenos Aires, Dublin, Saba, Brunleby ...
Even though it was initially said that Schnaftl Ufftschik made too much head music and too little leg music, the band won several titles - in 1996 the "Musica Vitale" prize for Berlin-Brandenburg, in 1997 the "German Folk Promotion Prize" and in 1998 they were guests at the Paris "Festival for Imaginary Music".
Despite initial line-up turbulence, an immense creative process began with a wide variety of stage programs, collaborations with national and international artists and participation in theater projects. A total of 6 CD productions are no small proof of this. Whether imaginary or ethnomystically obsessive, the band is still snaftilizing their audience 25 years later, with lots of leg and belly music - and arranged with brains.
