Schöne Verwandtschaft – Sheng, Mundharmonika, Maultrommel und Akkordeon

In the organizer's words:

The sheng was created around 3,000 years ago and is considered the predecessor of the accordion due to its design. Many legendary stories surround the Chinese mouth organ, which is one of the most important instruments in classical Chinese music. The harmonica and the Jew's harp, which, like the sheng and the accordion, are free reed instruments, also take up the principle of the percussive tongue and build a tonal bridge between East and West. The result is an exciting dialog between the instruments: from the archaic sheng to the expressive harmonica and the fascinating Jew's harp to the multi-faceted accordion.

The concert program unfolds as a literary musical fairy tale based on Chinese legends, combining sound, narrative and fantasy. The concert is open to families and children. It will be performed by:

  • Wu Wei, professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and world-renowned virtuoso based in Berlin. With his openness to new ideas, he has earned the Sheng a permanent place in concert halls.
  • Thomas Sutter, award-winning author, director, actor and composer of well over 500 songs and numerous musical theater pieces for children, young people and families.
  • Sören Birke, multi-instrumentalist, harmonica and jew's harp player, who approaches music with great curiosity, openness and a love of discovery. Sören organized Berlin's first tongue percussion festival exactly 30 years ago and even then brought the 4 instruments sheng, jew's harp, harmonica and accordion together on stage.
  • Vincenzo "Titti "Castrini is an Italian accordionist. His music is passionate, humorously melancholic - shaped by the reality he encounters on the street in nightclubs, theaters or at parties. His music is deeply human.
