The concert reading "Song of Longing" pays tribute to two extraordinary Jewish poets of the 20th century: Selma Merbaum and Gertrud Kolmar. Their poems and the sounds of The String Company meet in an impressive combination of spoken word and music.
Selma Merbaum (1924-1942), born in Czernowitz in Bukovina, left behind a moving lyrical oeuvre despite her short life. Her poems are characterized by a longing for life and love - her poem "Song of Longing" in particular is one of the most touching voices of a young poet whose life was violently ended in the Holocaust.
Gertrud Kolmar (1894-1943) is one of the most important German-language poets of her time. Her poetic world is rich in imagery and inner depth. Works such as "Die Aztekin", "Die Dichterin", "Die Jüdin" and "Die Unerschlossene" demonstrate the power of her language and her intense exploration of identity, femininity, nature and human existence.
In the concert reading, recitation and music enter into a sensitive dialog. Recited poems meet the musical sounds of The String Company: alongside poems set to music - including a setting of "Die Unerschlossene" composed by the ensemble itself - Yiddish, Hebrew and Sephardic songs are heard. The result is a multi-layered program that brings the poetic worlds of the two poets to life.
A touching homage to two great literary voices whose words still resonate today.
