"Solidarity in Action" - exhibition on solidarity and the realities of life for refugees at Europe's external borders

What does solidarity look like in practice - where Europe reaches its borders? From 2 to 6 December 2025, the exhibition "Solidarity in Action" by the association Project Elpida e. V. at the SomoS Gallery (Kottbusser Damm 95, 10967 Berlin) provides insights into the lives of refugees in Greece - and shows how civil society engagement provides concrete support on the ground. The occasion is International Volunteer Day on December 5.

The exhibition combines documentation, art and interaction. Authentic objects, artistic works and dialogical formats make visible what solidarity means in everyday life. Visitors are invited to reflect on responsibility, causes of flight and social commitment - and to discover their own scope for action.

The focus is on two perspectives: On the one hand, Project Elpida documents the work of partner organizations in Athens, Thessaloniki, Kavala and Samos - places where refugees and initiatives fight together for dignity, safety and prospects. The exhibition also looks at solidarity in Germany: how can humanity be practiced here?

"With Solidarity in Action, we want to show in challenging times that solidarity is not an abstract ideal, but an attitude that begins in everyday life," says Levin Schmidt, first board member of Project Elpida e. V.

The festive highlight will take place on December 5 from 18:00. Project Elpida invites visitors, supporters and partner organizations to an evening of encounters - as a sign of gratitude and encouragement to continue their commitment.

The exhibition was curated on a voluntary basis by Carolina Hanke (outreach curator), together with Levin Schmidt, Lorenz Schmidt and Gianni Manzella (project management). The poster for the exhibition, designed by Dirk Kesseler, artistically interprets the central themes.
