100 years of Miles Davis

Miles Davis would have been 100 years old on May 26. In his biography "Miles Davis - Sound of a Life", which has just been published by Reclam, Stefan Hentz explores the trumpeter's artistic and political self-image, asks questions about his personality - and about the myths that still surround the Prince of Darkness today. In Darmstadt's Stadtkirche, the Hamburg-based author, who was awarded the German Jazz Journalism Prize in 2019, will read from his book and create a kaleidoscope of narrative perspectives that, in interplay with the subtle improvisational art of saxophonist and flautist Anna-Lena Schnabel and pianist Florian Weber, two outstanding individualists of contemporary German jazz, opens up multi-layered new perspectives on the development and work of one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.

Miles Davis was a man of change who repeatedly redefined the boundaries of his art in the five decades of his professional career. From bebop to the tonal sophistication of cool jazz, from the earthy passion of hard bop to modal iridescence, from the magnetism of the swinging beat to the groove to the trances of electronic dance music. And just as it was important for Davis that his music did not stand still, Schnabel and Weber also face the challenge of keeping their reference to Miles Davis current and individual.
