Kobe-born trumpeter Takuya Kuroda, who now lives in Brooklyn, presents his eighth studio album with Everyday - a groovy, cross-genre fusion of jazz, hip-hop and neo-soul. Following the highly acclaimed Midnight Crisp (2022), which PopMatters described as a "future classic", Kuroda is deepening his search for the ideal mix of production and organic playing.
Everyday is characterized by his daily music-making: Tracks are first created at home, then expanded, refined, recast in the studio - until they match the sound image in his head.
The album celebrates the everyday in the best sense of the word - not banal, but deeply rooted in the rhythm of life. "Groove is the basis of all tracks," says Kuroda himself. His trumpet playing shines with clarity, a sense of rhythm and expression. Particularly noteworthy are the neo-soul track "Bad Bye" with singer FiJa and the flowing closer "Curiosity", on which Kuroda picks up the flugelhorn. In "Iron Giraffe", he creates space for saxophonist Craig Hill, whose playing is reminiscent of Kamasi Washington.
Everyday is no mere exercise in stylistic diversity - it is a passionate, personal statement. As Pitchfork writes: "Kuroda's art is not just dealing with many influences - it's the joy of it."
