17-year-old Fanny travels from Strasbourg to Leipzig for a language exchange. There she falls in love with Lena, the daughter of her host family, who is the same age. Lena is highly politically interested and motivated. She is involved in Fridays for Future, wants to study political science and take an activist stance against racism, sexism and climate change. To impress Lena, Fanny, scarred by bullying at school and a suicide attempt, invents a new identity for herself.
Claire Burger's coming-of-age film tells the story of growing up in a Europe where borders have opened up, but where prejudice and discrimination are still present despite the possibility of mobility and exchange. The two protagonists not only have to find themselves, but also explore the extent to which individual actions can change collective realities in the face of transnational crises and intergenerational conflicts.
