Dancing to the Dolls celebrates dancing as well as music and coming together. In this piece, the Würzburg dance ensemble has been expanded to include additional bodies: twelve uniformly designed puppets that can take on different meanings. They are dance partners or alter egos, they evoke memories of old acquaintances, family or former lovers.
But it is above all the choice of music that characterizes this energetic piece. Kevin O'Day's playlist with artists such as Iggy Pop, James Brown, Miles Davis and Curtis Mayfield is playfully humorous and at the same time full of nostalgia and pathos. And it does one thing above all: it makes you want to dance!
The expression "dancing till you drop" originated in Berlin in the 18th century. At the time, there was a collection of sculptures depicting figures from ancient mythology on the Großer Stern square in Tiergarten. These statues were popularly known in Berlin as "dolls". As people often took a long walk from the old Berlin city center to the Großer Stern at the weekend, the description of the long walk "to the dolls" came about. Over the years, the meaning of the expression changed from a spatial to a temporal dimension. One reason for this could be that there was also a lot of partying in the Tiergarten at the weekends, which led to the association with partying into the night.
