THE LINE BETWEEN US – Elf Positionen queerer Fotografie

In the organizer's words:

THE LINE BETWEEN US - Eleven positions of queer photography

Is society's treatment of the LGBTQIA* movement an indicator of the state of our democracy? The exhibition project THE LINE BETWEEN US, realized in collaboration with the laif agency and the laif foundation, is dedicated to the challenge of showing and debating the realities of life for queer people. In light of the current increase in violence against queer people, the project takes on an added urgency. In the exhibition, the eleven photographers question normative attributions from the inside perspective of the queer community. With photographic self-portraits, portraits, reportages, documentaries and installations, they provide a wide-ranging insight into their work, which contains both an aesthetic and political agenda. The visual concepts of their contributions focus on the power of empowerment and togetherness, on invisibility as a survival strategy for queer people in hostile environments and on the price of visibility. Sometimes glamorous, sometimes ruthless, sometimes quiet and seemingly casual, the photographs reveal a multi-layered panorama of photographic appropriation of a fluid representation beyond stigmatization and discrimination. With their self-determined depictions, the artists open up a view of the everyday lives of queer people and show different perspectives on the effects of continuous oppression and the extraordinary strength that comes from resistance. The project THE LINE BETWEEN US raises awareness for respectful coexistence and ultimately also poses the question of how the medium of photography can initiate processes of social change.
