6 weeks - 3 works of art - 1 screen
What does it mean when machines have dreams? What happens to poetry when it is no longer written by humans alone, but also by artificial intelligence? Can AI agents be creative? THE SCREENposes these questions on the basis of three artistic positions that deal with current developments in artificial intelligence. With THE SCREEN , a new format is being created in Lichthof 8 of the ZKM - a place that makes international media art tangible and at the same time invites visitors to linger and get together.
For six weeks,THE SCREEN will present works by Refik Anadol, Sasha Stiles and ZKM artists and developers Daniel Heiss, Bernd Lintermann and Marc Schütze on a monumental LED wall. At the center is an 8.5 × 6 meter screen spanning two floors, on which three artistic positions dealing with artificial intelligence from different perspectives will be shown every two weeks.
Refik Anadol
Machine Hallucinations - Satellite Simulations: B (2021)
March 13-27, 2026
Turkish-American artist and designer Refik Anadol is a pioneer in the field of data aesthetics and machine intelligence. With his immersive data sculptures, installations and performances, he redefines the connection between media art, architecture and technology and makes the omnipresent but invisible data visible and tangible in a spectacular way. The work is on loan from the Art Collection Telekom.
Sasha Stiles
A LIVING POEM (2025)
March 28 - April 10, 2026
The Calmyk-American poet, language artist and AI researcher Sasha Stiles is also breaking new ground with her practice: she uses AI as a co-author in the writing process and, with her AI alter ego Technelegy, explores the question of what it means to be human in the age of artificial intelligence. The work was originally conceived for the Museum of Modern Art and is inspired by its collection of text-based art.
Daniel Heiss, Marc Schütze
Agent Provocateur (2026)
April 11-26, 2026
Created especially for THE SCREEN, Agent Provocateur by ZKM artists and developers Daniel Heiss and Marc Schütze offers visitors the opportunity to participate in the creation of a media artwork. This new work for THE SCREEN focuses on so-called AI agents: programs that can perform tasks autonomously on behalf of users.
Experience art and stay
THE SCREEN invites you to linger in the atrium and take in the works in a special atmosphere and engage in conversation. The mint Café bar provides drinks during the evening openings from 6:30 pm to 10 pm.
