A run-down neighborhood on the fringes of Athens plagued by crime and poverty. Reda (Aram Sabbah) and Chatila (Mahmoud Bakri) are cousins struggling daily with the plight of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians: the life of refugees. Bound by ties of love and friendship, but also by the burden of despair that haunts them across time and place, they fight to escape their misery and secure a better future for themselves and those they left behind. Is there a way out for the doomed? How can humanity be preserved when one is born into a life permeated by incessant cruelty? An insightful, moving, and gripping exploration of the Palestinian condition, but also of what it means to be a stateless refugee in a world shaped by racial prejudice and social inequality. Prominent Danish-Palestinian filmmaker Mahdi Fleifel co-wrote his latest film with Moroccan-British writer and filmmaker Fyzal Boulifa. It premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and won the Audience Award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival. (ALFILM)

Ein heruntergekommenes Viertel am Rande Athens, das von Kriminalität und Armut gezeichnet ist: die Cousins Reda (Aram Sabbah) und Chatila (Mahmoud Bakri) ringen täglich mit der gleichen Notlage wie hunderttausend andere Palästinenser:innen – dem Leben als Geflüchtete. Verbunden durch Liebe und Freundschaft, aber auch die Last der Verzweiflung, die sie über Zeit und Ort hinweg verfolgt, kämpfen sie darum, ihrem Elend zu entkommen und eine bessere Zukunft für sich selbst und ihre Lieben, die sie zurückgelassen haben, zu sichern. Aber gibt es überhaupt einen Ausweg für die beiden? Wie kann die Menschlichkeit bewahrt werden, wenn man in ein Leben hineingeboren wird, das von unaufhörlicher Grausamkeit geprägt ist? To a Land Unknown ist eine einfühlsame, bewegende und fesselnde Auseinandersetzung mit der Situation der Palästinenser:innen und damit, was es bedeutet, ein:e staatenlose:r Geflüchtete:r in einer von rassistischen Vorurteilen und sozialen Ungleichheiten geprägten Welt zu sein. Der bekannte dänisch-palästinensische Filmemacher Mahdi Fleifel hat seinen neuesten Film gemeinsam mit dem marokkanisch-britischen Drehbuchautor und Filmemacher Fyzal Boulifa geschrieben. Der Film feierte seine Premiere 2024 bei den Filmfestspielen von Cannes und gewann den Publikumspreis beim Internationalen Filmfestival Thessaloniki.
