The project deals with the social and individual after-effects of the
SED dictatorship in East Germany - particularly with regard to breaches of trust, family conflicts
conflicts and the transgenerational passing on of experiences. The focus is on the
question of how the confrontation with the past - and in particular with the
practices of state security - still shapes identity, political attitudes and social coexistence today.

The aim here is to shed light on how experiences of humiliation - be it through state
repression, devaluation of life's achievements after reunification or social stigmatization
stigmatization - are inscribed in personal and collective identities. How are these
experiences passed on within families? Which narratives shape the
self-image and the image of East Germany today? The history of the GDR is also a
of humiliation - by the regime, but also by the abrupt change of system after 1989.
