Vincent Peirani is one of the most idiosyncratic and at the same time most poetic voices in European jazz. As an accordionist, composer and sound architect, he has developed a musical language in recent years that defies all fixed categories.
His latest album Living Being IV: Time Reflections is a profound exploration of the phenomenon of time: how it passes, how it stretches, breaks and changes - and how it shapes our hearing.
The starting point was an enforced standstill: the first months of the pandemic. A time when Peirani - normally constantly on the move - was suddenly forced to come to rest. This moment of deceleration gave rise to a musical reflection on rhythm, memory and perception.
Musically, the album unfolds a remarkable range. Peirani does not use the accordion as a folkloristic instrument, but as the central organ of a complex body of sound. His playing ranges from delicate, breathing lines to orchestral densities in which saxophone, piano, bass and drums merge into a pulsating organism. The sound always remains transparent - every voice is audible, every pause meaningful.
