Ornithological canoe tour in the Berlin area

Birdwatching in the Spreewald from the water

This excursion combines natural history birdwatching with a peaceful canoe trip through the Spreewald. Accompanied by the experienced ornithologist Stefan Guth, you will explore one of the most species-rich wetland landscapes in Brandenburg. The Spreewald is located around an hour south-east of Berlin and is characterized by a dense network of rivers, oxbow lakes and alluvial forests - ideal habitats for numerous bird species.

Under expert guidance, you will paddle through the narrow side arms of the Spree in two-person kayaks. The focus is on recognizing typical bird calls as well as observing behaviour and habitats. Species such as the oriole, black woodpecker and hoopoe are among the characteristic inhabitants of this region. The excursion is aimed at nature-loving participants who would like to get to know the Spreewald from an unusual perspective.

After the guided part, there is enough time to explore the area independently by canoe.

Your local ornithologist

Stefan Guth works as a mapper of birds, reptiles and amphibians in a planning office and also works freelance in environmental education, including in the Saxon Switzerland National Park. He developed a keen interest in the local animal world at a young age, which intensified again in adulthood after a break in his youth.

He is particularly interested in the diversity of bird species and their vocalizations. In addition to the first detection of new species, he is particularly interested in observing previously unknown behaviors. Excursions have taken him to numerous important protected areas in Germany, including coastal regions and alpine landscapes.
