The tour of the Rhenish mining area leads into a landscape torn open between lignite mining and the promise of the future. Where the huge Hambach open-cast mine is still visible today, a new lake landscape is to be created in the coming decades - ecologically, economically and touristically charged.

The tour looks at this promised future - and at the reality on the ground. In Elsdorf, Manheim and Bürgewald, we meet people who are planning, accompanying or questioning the structural change. This makes it possible to experience the mining district as a contested space - and the question of what is to become of this landscape and who decides on it becomes urgent.
