This wild herb seminar is a multi-day, structured training course for beginners who want to systematically deepen their knowledge of native wild plants and gain significantly more confidence in their identification. The course is designed as an intensive training course and is partially recognized as educational time / educational leave, making it particularly suitable for working people.

The seminar is aimed at people who have already gained some experience with wild herbs and are able to recognize common species such as nettle, goutweed or ribwort or have previously attended an introductory seminar. The aim is to build up botanical understanding, recognize connections and identify plants in an ecological context rather than in isolation.

Structure and learning concept

The wild herb seminar extends over six intensive course days and combines a preparatory online theory unit with several days of practice-oriented work in the field. This structure makes it possible to devote almost all of the attendance time to practical identification work.

The course takes place in Berlin. The seminar house in Pankow is located in a comparatively sparsely populated area and offers ideal conditions for concentrated learning in a natural environment. All locations are easily accessible by public transport.

Educational leave / educational time

A central aspect of this wild herb seminar is its recognition as educational leave in selected federal states. This means that, depending on the federal state, participation can be applied for as paid educational leave. This recognition underlines the professional standard, the didactic quality and the scientifically sound approach of the seminar.

Contents of the training

The focus is clearly on the safe identification of native wild plants. Theory and practice are closely intertwined.

Theoretical basics:

Structure and morphology of plants

Introduction to plant families and systematic identification

Ingredients, active substances and potential harmful substances

Critical classification of traditional herbal medicine based on current research

Legal principles of collecting

Use of identification apps and AI - possibilities and limitations

Practice in the field:

Identifying wild plants directly in the habitat

Working with identification keys

Recognizing suitable collection sites

Practicing reliable distinguishing features

Basic application (edibility, simple use)

Participants have sufficient time to identify plants at their own pace and to clarify questions directly with the lecturers.

Lecturers and supervision

The seminar is led by biologist and author Manuel Larbig, supported by the experienced Waldsamkeit team. All lecturers have a scientific background and many years of teaching experience.

Free online revision sessions are offered in the fall and the following year to consolidate knowledge in the long term. In addition, all participants receive access to the digital learning platform with scripts, presentations and supplementary materials.
