A steep ride on the backlash wave

Culture wars are box office hits. Not just ideologically. So it's only natural that film director Gordon should devote herself to the supposed virtue terror of woke minorities. With her film crew, which is not without tension, she ventures into a new adaptation of George Orwell's classic "1984": a dystopian world bestseller about a totalitarian society and an insecure hero who fights against bans on thought and speech, against surveillance, new language and thought police.

With "The Sequel", author and director Nora Abdel-Maksoud published a sharp analysis of the discourse surrounding political correctness and identity politics in 2018. But this was long before the gender ban at German authorities and the anti-diversity campaign in the USA.

Following the multi-award-winning plays "Jeeps" and "Doping", which were commissioned by the Münchner Kammerspiele, Nora Abdel-Maksoud examines right-wing discourse strategies for their comedic potential and catapults an overburdened film team into the middle of the debates of our time in "Wokey Wokey".
