Women Support Women – 100 Jahre GEDOK | Fragmente / Dysfunktion

As part of the 100th anniversary of the GEDOK, the first curated group exhibition of 2026 is dedicated to the theme of "Fragments / Dysfunction".

While in psychology this pair of terms describes a certain state of mind and its consequences - such as a mental fragmentation that causes dysfunction - in art it opens up a more far-reaching level of meaning. Fragments, empty spaces and disruptions can be deliberately used creative means that aim to question visual habits and break up familiar patterns of perception.

Playing with visual expectations and irritating the gaze have always been among the defining strategies of the avant-garde. Artistic disruptions enable new perspectives and open up spaces for interpretation, imagination and creative continuation.

Historically, this attitude is also closely linked to female artists and art patrons who questioned existing norms and opened up new paths - including Käthe Kollwitz and Ida Dehmel, whose commitment made a significant contribution to the visibility of female artists.

Against this backdrop, the exhibition understands the supposedly flawed not as a deficiency, but as a productive artistic strategy. Fragmentary survivals and deliberate disruptions open up new ways of seeing and interpreting - and invite the public to question their own habits of perception.
