51. Mülheimer Theatertage: "Play Auerbach!" von Avishai Milstein

In the organizer's words:

Do you know Philipp Auerbach? The man survived the Holocaust and was appointed State Commissioner for racially, religiously and politically persecuted people in Bavaria after the war. As an idealist, he tried to re-establish Jewish life in Germany. After his suicide in 1952, he fell into oblivion and would probably have remained there if the Münchner Kammerspiele had not commissioned a play about him from the Israeli Avishai Milstein. Milstein, born in 1964, is an old theater bunny. He studied in Munich and looks at the relationship between Germans and Jews with malicious sarcasm. So "Play Auerbach!" is not a docu-theater, but a revue on the subject of the culture of remembrance. It comes across as a mangy, comical amateur drama full of blunders - and gets to the heart of the matter. (Christine Dössel, selection committee "Plays" 2026)
