Alessandro Scarlatti created more than 100 operas and 600 chamber cantatas, in addition to many other works, and had a significant influence on the Italian High Baroque. His sacred music is often based on the vocal polyphony of the Renaissance - even Scarlatti's handwriting imitates the old musical notation. But these pieces in particular are often so harmonically bold and surprising that something completely new emerges. The chamber choir orchi e balene performs a mass, an Ave maris stella and four psalm motets with Andreas Arend on the theorbo and Eva Schulze on the organ under the direction of Markus Wettstein.
