Many people first think of locusts as "insect pests" or "biblical plagues". But far from it! Anyone who dares to take a closer look will be surprised by the diversity of their lifestyles, forms and songs. Grasshoppers react sensitively to changes in land use and climate and are therefore ideally suited as environmental indicators. Species of nutrient-poor and moist habitats are increasingly endangered, while numerous warmth-loving species are expanding their ranges.
