BRITPOP ORCHESTRAL with the Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of André de Ridder

Under the direction of André de Ridder, the Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra presents the Britpop Orchestral program, which sheds light on the British music landscape from unusual angles. The creative minds behind some of the most influential British pop and alternative rock bands take center stage: Blur, Gorillaz and Radiohead.

Edward Elgar's "Enigma Variations", a highlight of English Romantic orchestral literature from the end of the 19th century, will provide a classical counterpoint.

The orchestra sets a further accent with a work by Anna Meredith, one of the most exciting voices on the young British classical and pop scene. Her music transcends stylistic boundaries and moves freely between contemporary classical music, art-pop, electronica, film and TV soundtracks, installation art and experimental rock.

From the ranks of the influential rock bands that have inspired the Britpop Orchestral program, two formative personalities stand out in particular.
Firstly, Jonny Greenwood, guitarist of Radiohead, has also made an international name for himself as a composer. His film scores have become increasingly popular; he received the Silver Bear at the Berlinale in 2008 for the soundtrack to "There Will Be Blood".

The other is Damon Albarn, frontman of Blur and creator of the Gorillaz, who has been shaping the British music scene since the 1990s with his unmistakable mix of indie rock, pop and experimental soundscapes. His projects are characterized by constant artistic renewal and cross-genre openness.
