Encounter with one of the great story collectors of documentary film - Franz Xaver Gernstl

For more than four decades, Franz Xaver Gernstl has traveled through Germany, Europe and the world for his BR cult series "Gernstl unterwegs". Whether on the Danube, in the Dolomites or in Ireland, he was always interested in meeting people: What do they dream of? And what paths do they find for their lives? His films tell of these encounters and of his curiosity about the lives of others.

In his new book, Gernstl looks back on this life as a filmmaker: on the years "on the road", on formative encounters and on the stories behind his films and on what he did not seek, but nevertheless found.

At DOK.fest München, Franz Xaver Gernstl can now be experienced live as an author. As part of the book premiere, he will read from his book, show film excerpts and talk about the beginnings of his work, his travels and the moments from which Gernstl emerged along the way. A special opportunity to meet the filmmaker in person in the city where he lives and works and where his travels began.
