Claudia Michelsen breathes new life into Thomas Mann's Lotte in Weimar with a warm voice and a keen sense of nuance on Saturday, April 25, at 7 p.m. in Borbeck Castle. The novel, in which Mann goes in search of traces of Goethe's first love, is a quiet and touching reflection on memory, age and the after-effects of a life.

Charlotte Kestner, the former Lotte from Goethe's Werther, returns to Weimar after decades as an aged woman. Officially, the trip is to visit her sister Amalie and introduce her daughter to Weimar society. But in reality, her longing for Goethe leads her back to the city of her youth. A longing for the man who made her famous with his novel, but at the same time exposed her publicly by making the spicy love triangle between her, her fiancé Kestner and himself public.

Thomas Mann paints a multi-layered and profound portrait of a woman coming to terms with her own myth, with the burden of the past and with an image that others have created of her.

The well-known actress Claudia Michelsen unfolds this multi-faceted character with her presence and emotive depth. A quiet, moving and at the same time cheerful evening about remembering, about self-images and the question: What remains of a person in the shadow of a genius?
