The school theater group of Staufer-Gymnasium Waiblingen will bring their production of "The Winter's Tale" to the Kulturhaus Schwanen on Thursday, June 18, 2026, and Friday, June 19, 2026, at 11:30 am and 6:00 pm. The production is being created in cooperation with the Kulturhaus Schwanen and is based on William Shakespeare. Ten young people from grades 7 to 9 take the material and translate it with their own ideas into a version that short-circuits the abuse of power, fear, propaganda and the power of language with the present.

The Staufergymnasium's drama club has dared to tackle a classic - William Shakespeare's comedy "The Winter's Tale".
As early as 1968, the author Franz Fühmann recognized the potential of the fairy tale as a subtle criticism of the fickle autocrats of the world and packaged it in a children's book version that was superficially harmless enough that he was allowed to publish his "Winter's Tale" in the GDR. The plot revolves around King Leontes' sudden delusion that his wife and his best friend have conspired against him. Even more clearly than in Shakespeare's play, in Fühmann's work we see (almost) the entire staff staring in horror and coughing and clearing their throats in disbelief, but not protesting, as they accompany this madness. Only one young woman, the queen's chambermaid, dares to protest.

The ten young people, who attend classes 7-9 at Staufergymnasium, recognized parallels to current world events in the material.

We, too, sometimes stand there in disbelief and shock, unable to believe how powerful men (!) use wars, tariffs, insults (hate speech) and allegations (fake news) to push through their agenda. Drawing on both texts and with many ideas of their own, the Theater-AG is now performing their own version of the winter fairy tale.
