French baroque opera by Marc-Antoine Charpentier
The new production of Charpentier's opera DAVID ET JONATHAS (1688) combines baroque tonal language with a contemporary abstract world of images and characters: Jonathas and David are friends, although David appears to be an opponent of Jonathas' father Saul. Jonathas thus finds himself in a conflict between personal attachment and family loyalty - and with him the question arises as to what remains of friendship when political power comes between people.
