A siren in a human body nomadizes through the postmodern reality of a desiccating planet while exploring survival, identity and belonging. Part sci-fi, part documentary, this hybrid debut delves into the merfolk subculture between self-preservation and political activism.
A nomadic siren returns in human form to an Earth in crisis. Seeking connection with other merfolk, she is confronted with the complex tensions between mythology and postmodern reality, her human body feels alien and breathing on land becomes increasingly difficult. Questioning conventional ideas of biography, identity and belonging, 'UNA' wanders the US as a restless woman, increasingly confronted by her rebellious body, which ultimately strives to become more-than-human. SIRENS CALL is a genre-crossing hybrid of science fiction, road movie and documentary about a subculture that uses fantastical imagery to speak about collective trauma, body politics and enduring transition.
